How do you discover Pop Culture in 2017?
Google it! We can just stop there right? 🙂 Yes, I just put a smily face there, that is how I roll.
Actually these days it is very prominent on Youtube. Pop culture used to be found on TV when I was a kid. We had G.I. Joe, Transformers, Barbie, and a host of other cultural things. This is not to mention music, Michael Jackson, Prince, Motley Crew,….oh wait, that is rock…my bad. All of this was delivered to us via TV. Fast forward to 2017 and I would say that TV is beginning to be replaced by Youtube. Why would I say that? Here is why, at night, when I want to watch something, I actually watch Youtube for HOURS!
I was not even conscious that I was doing this! It just slowly grew into a habit. Another sign is that now they had adds on Youtube, just like they did on TV growing up. Plus, everything is “in the now”. You can get live information. Channels put out videos in hours, not day or months. Breaking news is instant and engagement is all over the place. 3 of the top daily traffic sites are: Amazon, Facebook, and Youtube.
Where do I find today’s pop music?
What about the music in 2017? you can find mainstream pop music free all over. Pandora used to be the go to, but now I use Spotify and again, Youtube. When you consider that there are video’s on Youtube with a billion+ views, that is just mind numbing.
What about toys?
Star Wars once again has come back (not that they ever left) and grabbed a major market share in the toy industry much like they did in the late 70’s and early 80’s. Legos seem to have stayed strong for my entire life. They keep up with the times and even have a few movies that I think are really great. I know when my best friends son’s birthday comes around that I can never go wrong getting him some Star Wars legos.
Maybe you can add to this. Feel free to comment below.
